Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided pie chart and the table illustrate the outcome of a survey of library visitors conducted at a university.

Overall, it's clear that full-time undergraduate students constituted the majority of the library users and great satisfaction was achieved because of staff's helpfulness.

The survey demonstrated that regular undergraduate students enrolled in the university formed the majority as they accounted for 44% of the library users while full-time postgraduate students made up 25% and part-time postgraduate students formed 16% occupying the second and third place respectively. Academic staff and non-regular students only made up 8% and 7% respectively.

It also showed that 95% of the users were very satisfied by staff's helpfulness and no user was unsatisfied. The users being greatly satisfied with the opening hours accounted for 65% while 35% of them were fairly satisfied. Nearly a quarter of the total students weren't satisfied with the availability of journals while nearly half of the students were very satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, the report could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories. For instance, you could have noted that undergraduate students combined represent a significant majority compared to all other groups. Additionally, the description of the satisfaction data is slightly repetitive in structure. To reach a higher band, ensure that you synthesize the information rather than simply listing the figures for each category. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'while', 'as', and 'respectively', which help link your points. However, the transition between the chart data and the table data could be smoother. The use of 'It also showed that' is a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking phrases to connect the different aspects of the survey results more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the user categories from the satisfaction levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'constituted the majority', 'accounted for', and 'occupying the second and third place' are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'great satisfaction was achieved because of staff's helpfulness', which sounds slightly unnatural. Using 'very satisfied' or 'high levels of satisfaction' would be more precise. You have used some less common vocabulary, but there is room to incorporate more sophisticated academic collocations to enhance the precision of your reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your grammar is generally accurate. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor issues, such as 'The users being greatly satisfied with the opening hours accounted for 65%', which is slightly clunky; a more natural phrasing would be '65% of users were very satisfied with the opening hours'. You have good control over punctuation and basic sentence construction. To move to a higher band, try to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, to improve the flow and sophistication of your writing.
