Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart and table illustrate the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Overall, the highest proportion of library users were the full-time undergraduates, while the academic staff were the least. Additionally, majority of the users were satisfied with the library opening hours and the helpfulness of the staff.

The full-time undergraduate users accounted for 44% of the total proportion which was the highest number. This was followed by full-time postgraduate and part-time undergraduate each having 25% and 16% respectively. The academic staff was the least group with only 7%. This was followed by the distance learning for all courses with 8%.

As per the user satisfaction, majority of the users were very satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff and non of them was dissatisfied. Furthermore, no user reported to be dissatisfied with the library opening hours. The proportions of individuals who were satisfied and dissatisfied as per the availability of books, journals and reliability of WIFI varied considerably.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You included the key categories and made relevant comparisons between the user groups. However, the description of the satisfaction data is somewhat vague. While you mention that proportions 'varied considerably,' you do not provide specific data points or trends for the availability of books, journals, or Wi-Fi, which are essential for a complete summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that all significant data points mentioned in the prompt are supported by specific figures from the table.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Furthermore,' and 'This was followed by' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. However, the connection between the final sentence and the rest of the paragraph is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the data presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'proportion,' 'accounted for,' and 'satisfied.' There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'non of them' (should be 'none') and 'the least group' (should be 'the smallest group'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to data description would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'no user reported to be dissatisfied' (should be 'no users reported being dissatisfied') and 'the academic staff was the least group' (should be 'the academic staff was the smallest group'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are occasional slips in article usage and subject-verb agreement. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score in this criterion.
