Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart and table below show the outcomes of a survey of library users at a university.

Overall, both of the charts acquire information about library users. The first chart has calculated the library users in percentage and has divided them in categories. Meanwhile, the other table has estimated the satisfaction level of users regarding the library.

Regarding the user categories, it has been divided into five apparent classifications. The largest group is of the full-time undergraduates whereas full-time postgraduates cover 25% portion of the users. The smallest in them is the academic staff having 7% users. Part-time postgraduates cover the 16% of total leaving behind the 8% which is used by people with distance learning.

Turning to the satisfaction levels, the users are very satisfied with library opening hours as shown in the table having none of those who are not satisfied. Helpfulness of staff is highly praised and 95% of the users are very satisfied. Book and journal availability is a part which carry 50% of those who are satisfied and remaining are either fairly or not satisfied. The same ratio goes to the reliability of wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the prompt. However, the report lacks a more analytical comparison. For instance, while you listed the percentages for user categories, you did not explicitly compare the groups to highlight the significant gap between the largest (undergraduates) and smallest (academic staff) groups. Additionally, the description of the satisfaction levels is slightly repetitive in structure. To reach a higher band, ensure you synthesize the data rather than just listing it, and provide a more comprehensive comparison between the different satisfaction metrics.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, a body paragraph for the chart, and a body paragraph for the table. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'the' or simple sentence starters. Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For example, the final sentence 'The same ratio goes to the reliability of wi-fi' is a bit vague and could be better linked to the previous sentence using a more precise cohesive marker.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, including terms like 'classifications', 'satisfaction level', and 'availability'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'acquire information' (which is not the correct collocation for a chart) and 'carry 50% of those who are satisfied'. These inaccuracies slightly hinder the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise verbs when describing data trends, such as 'account for', 'represent', or 'demonstrate'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'The largest group is of the full-time undergraduates' is slightly unnatural, and 'leaving behind the 8% which is used by people' is grammatically clunky. There are also minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
