IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and the table illustrates the outcome of a survey of library users at a university.
Overall, the full-time undergraduates are the one using the library most regularly while the full-time postgraduates being the second. The part-time postgraduates used it twice than the distance learners. The helpfulness of the staff has been the best and the availability of the journals had been the problem.
The chart clearly depicts the full-time undergraduates are using the library almost at 44% with full-time postgraduate being the second at 25%. The part-time postgraduate students use the library at 16% while the distance learners and academic staff have used it equally.
The survey illustrates that people using the library are satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff members and they are fairly satisfied with the availability of books in the library. The students are unsatisfied with the journals available in the library and also the availability of wi-fi has been the issue of students with the library.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the specific areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview of the data. While you mention the 'helpfulness of the staff' and 'availability of journals', the comparison between the categories could be more precise. For example, stating that part-time postgraduates used it 'twice than' the distance learners is grammatically awkward and slightly inaccurate in its phrasing. To improve, ensure you group data logically and provide a more cohesive summary of the trends rather than listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, and the logical flow could be improved by using more varied linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'consequently'). While the overall progression is clear, the referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'the library' and 'the survey'. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between the chart data and the table data would elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'depicts', 'regularly', and 'satisfied'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'used it twice than' is not standard English; 'twice as much as' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'availability of wi-fi has been the issue' is slightly unnatural; 'a point of concern' or 'a significant issue' would be better. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing when describing data trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. For example, 'The pie chart and the table illustrates' contains a subject-verb agreement error (should be 'illustrate'). The phrase 'full-time postgraduates being the second' is a fragment and lacks a main verb. There are also issues with article usage and tense consistency, such as 'had been the problem' when referring to static survey results. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear, finite verb will improve your accuracy.
