Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, identifying the primary user categories and satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the percentages, you struggle to make meaningful comparisons between the categories. For instance, stating that academic staff and distance learning users 'both make the contribution of 15 percent' is accurate, but the report lacks a clear, cohesive overview that synthesizes the data effectively. The description of the satisfaction survey is also slightly disjointed, as you list percentages without fully explaining the relationship between the different satisfaction metrics provided in the table. To improve, focus on grouping related data points more logically and providing a more analytical summary of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In addition', 'and the', 'among all these'). The progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'the availability of journals follow the trend least', which makes it difficult to understand the comparison being made. While the overall arrangement is logical, the transitions between sentences could be smoother and more varied to improve the flow of the report. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of sophisticated linking words limits the coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on basic terms like 'contribution', 'trendy', and 'votes', which are not always appropriate for describing statistical data. For example, 'trendy' is an informal choice for describing user categories. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the availability of journals follow the trend least', which is imprecise. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more academic vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'constitute', 'account for', 'proportion', and 'fluctuate', and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the survey have', 'students was', 'users uses') and awkward phrasing ('the category of full-time undergraduate makes the contribution of 44 percent'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the lack of commas in complex sentences makes some parts difficult to parse. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Reducing the number of basic errors will significantly improve the readability and accuracy of your writing.
