Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to address the task requirements adequately. Firstly, it is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the score. The content is incomplete, as the description of the data stops abruptly mid-sentence regarding the 'availability of journals'. Furthermore, the response lacks a clear overview of the main trends or comparisons, which is essential for an Academic Task 1. Instead of summarizing the data, the writer simply lists figures for each category. The inclusion of personal opinions, such as 'they need to increase the timing', is inappropriate for an objective data report. To improve, ensure all data points are covered, provide a clear summary, and maintain a formal, analytical tone.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The organization is very basic and lacks a logical flow. While there is an attempt to use sequencing words like 'First one', 'Second one', and 'Third one', these are repetitive and mechanical. The paragraphing is poor, with the entire response essentially functioning as a list rather than a cohesive report. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the abrupt ending makes the text feel unfinished. To improve, use a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Regarding') and structure the essay into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group related data points together.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'category is' and 'are satisfied' are used repeatedly, which restricts the range of language. There are also errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'they are asking about' (the chart does not ask questions) and 'their is no not satisfied' (incorrect grammar and awkward phrasing). The vocabulary is insufficient to describe data trends effectively. To improve, learn specific collocations for describing charts, such as 'a significant proportion', 'the majority of respondents', or 'a notable minority', and avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive sentence structures. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, such as 'they shows' (subject-verb agreement), 'their is' (confusing 'their' with 'there'), and 'which is separated' (incorrect tense/voice). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with irregular spacing and missing full stops. The lack of complex sentence structures prevents the demonstration of higher-level grammatical control. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct use of articles, and incorporating complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to link ideas more effectively.
