Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportions of different categories of users who used a university library, while the table provides information about their levels of satisfaction with various aspects of the library.
Overall, full-time undergraduates constituted the largest proportion of library users, whereas academic staff represented the smallest group. In terms of satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff received the most positive ratings, while the availability of journals had the highest proportion of dissatisfied users.
According to the pie chart, full-time undergraduate students accounted for 44% of library users, making them by far the largest group. They were followed by full-time postgraduates at 25% and part-time postgraduates at 16%. Distance-learning students represented a relatively small proportion, at 8%, while academic staff made up just 7% of users.
The table shows that the helpfulness of staff was the most highly rated feature, with 95% of respondents being very satisfied and the remaining 5% fairly satisfied. Library opening hours also received positive feedback, with 65% very satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied, meaning that nobody reported being dissatisfied.
By comparison, satisfaction with the availability of books was somewhat lower, with 50% very satisfied, 40% fairly satisfied and 10% not satisfied. The figures for the availability of journals were less favourable: 45% were very satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied and 20% not satisfied. Finally, 48% of users were very satisfied with the reliability of Wi-Fi, while 33% were fairly satisfied and 19% were not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends in both the pie chart and the table. The data is accurately selected and reported, with effective comparisons made between the different categories of users and the various satisfaction metrics. For example, you correctly identified the largest and smallest user groups and contrasted the high satisfaction levels for staff helpfulness with the lower ratings for journal availability. The information is well-integrated, and the report is logically structured to highlight the key features without unnecessary detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction and overview to the specific details of the pie chart and then the table. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', 'by comparison', and 'finally' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the referencing is consistently clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'constituted the largest proportion', 'received the most positive ratings', and 'less favourable' demonstrate a good command of academic language. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for the task. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data reporting (e.g., 'a significant majority' or 'a marginal minority') could elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses in the introduction and the comparison sentences in the body paragraphs. The punctuation is accurate, and there are virtually no grammatical errors. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few complex structures used are handled with precision. This level of accuracy and variety is consistent with a high band score.
