Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the breakdown of library users into distinct groups, while the table demonstrates the proportion of library users into categories in term of different library services.

Overall, full time undergraduates account for the highest library users, while academic staff account for the smallest percentage across the five categories. The table depicts the proportion of user satisfaction level. The helpfulness of staff and library opening hours has the highest proportion of satisfaction. Meanwhile, availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi have the most dissatisfied users.

Full-time undergraduates make up the largest proportion of library users at 44%, while academic staff account for the smallest share at 7%. Full-time postgraduates stand in the middle with 25% user population. However, both part-time graduates and distance learning (all courses) account for 16% and 8% respectively.

The table describes the customer satisfaction levels at the library with different services. For instance, the helpfulness and library opening hours receive 95% and 65% satisfactory remarks and 5% and 35% fair satisfaction with 0% dissatisfaction. The availability of books stands in the middle with 50% satisfactory remarks. However, the availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi have the lowest satisfaction level with 45% and 48% respectively. On the other hand, the proportion of dissatisfaction accounts for 20% and 19% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student provides a clear overview and successfully reports the main features and comparisons from both the pie chart and the table. The response accurately notes that full-time undergraduates account for the highest percentage (44%) while academic staff account for the lowest (7%). Furthermore, the details regarding customer satisfaction levels across different library services are properly extracted and contrasted, noting high satisfaction for staff helpfulness and opening hours compared to lower satisfaction for journals and wi-fi. However, there is a minor mathematical misinterpretation in the discussion of satisfaction data, where 'fair satisfaction' and 'dissatisfaction' percentages are somewhat confused with general remarks. Nonetheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and key trends are well covered, fitting the criteria for Band 7.0 well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. It begins with a general introductory statement, moves into a clear overall summary paragraph, and then breaks down the specific data points logically into distinct paragraphs for the pie chart and the table respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'For instance', and 'On the other hand' are utilized to guide the reader through the data, although some transitional elements feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the chart data from the table data, ensuring the structure supports readability. Overall cohesion is clear and logical, fully satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing phrases such as 'breakdown of library users', 'proportion of user satisfaction level', and 'customer satisfaction levels'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'satisfactory remarks' and 'reliability of wi-fi'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'account for the highest library users' (instead of 'account for the highest proportion of library users') and awkward preposition use like 'in term of' instead of 'in terms of'. These minor lexical errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the Band 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the text, successfully integrating comparative structures such as 'make up the largest proportion... while academic staff account for the smallest share'. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in the reporting of statistical percentages. However, a few grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings persist, such as 'account for the highest library users' and the slightly fragmented phrasing in 'with 5% and 35% fair satisfaction with 0% dissatisfaction'. Punctuation is generally controlled, and grammatical errors do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
