Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The student has written a response about the wrong prompt entirely. The prompt required summarising a survey about library users and their satisfaction levels at a university, based on a chart and a table. However, the student wrote an Academic Task 1 response describing the floor plan of a college cafe before and after redesigning. Because the response is completely off-topic and fails to address any part of the actual data provided, it cannot receive a passing score for Task Achievement and is awarded a band 1.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
Although the response is off-topic regarding the data, it is organised into clear paragraphs with an introduction, overview, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'whereas', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' are used to connect ideas, albeit sometimes awkwardly or mechanically. Paragraphing is logical for a floor plan description, but the complete irrelevance to the prompt prevents a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The student demonstrates a basic vocabulary range suitable for describing a physical layout, including terms like 'infrastructure', 'modification', 'placement', and 'north-western corner'. However, there are numerous inappropriate lexical choices and unnatural collocations due to the fundamental misunderstanding of the prompt, as well as minor errors such as 'beneath to it' and 'lower to it'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as prepositional phrases and relative clauses ('where foods and drinks were available'). However, there are frequent grammatical inaccuracies, missing articles, and awkward phrasing, such as 'in addition to it toilets were at the same location' and 'staff dining room is replaced by take-away food'. Errors sometimes cause confusion for the reader.
