IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two provided graphs illustrate the satisfaction of five library services and the categories of users who usually attend the library in a university. The data is collected from a survey and units are measured in percetanges.
Overall, full-time students are the most common visitors of the library, whereas academic staff has the lowest percetange. In addition, people are generally more satisfied than not. In particular, users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of the library workers and the library opening hours.
It can be seen in the pie chart that only about 15% of users were either part of the academic staff or distance learners from all courses, whilst students account for the highest proportions: 44% are full-time undergraduate, 25% are full-time postgraduate and lastly, 16% are part time postgraduate.
Regarding the table, services such as library opening hours and helpfulness of staff have a 100% of satisfaction (either with a very satisfied or a fairly satisfied review). Finally, people are not particularly happy about the availability of journals, which has the highest percentage of non satisfied members, with 20%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting that full-time students are the primary library users and that overall satisfaction levels are high. Key data points are accurately selected and compared, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates at 44% and the high satisfaction with opening hours and staff helpfulness. However, there is a minor misinterpretation in the opening paragraph stating that the graphs illustrate 'five library services' when the table actually shows five satisfaction aspects of various services. Despite this minor slip, the task is well covered with relevant details and clear comparisons, meeting the criteria for a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph and an overview, followed by separate body paragraphs dedicated to the pie chart and the table respectively. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'In particular', and 'Regarding the table'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual elements of the prompt. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions could be made more sophisticated to reach higher bands. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, employing terms like 'illustrate', 'proportions', 'satisfaction', and 'availability'. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'dominance' or descriptive phrases, though there are a few spelling errors ('percetanges' instead of percentages, repeated twice) and minor word choice issues (e.g., 'attend the library' instead of 'use the library'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the information clearly and precisely without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'services such as library opening hours and helpfulness of staff have a 100% of satisfaction'). There is good control over grammar and punctuation for the most part, with frequent error-free sentences. Minor grammatical slips do occur, such as 'a 100% of satisfaction' instead of '100% satisfaction' and 'non satisfied' instead of 'dissatisfied' or 'not satisfied' (though the latter mirrors the prompt). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede the reader's understanding.
