Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and the table illustrate the outcome of a survey of library users at a university.

Overall, there are five types of library users and most of them are full-time undergraduate whereas academic staff holds the least portion of it. The library users are mostly satisfied with the helpfulness of staff though they are hardly happy with the unavailability of journals and unreliable wi-fi connection.

The library users are classified into five types and the majority of them are full-time bachelor's students with a percentage of 44%. The second largest percentage of users are full-time master's students holding a percentage of 25% of the pie chart. The part-time postgraduate users are moderately lower than the full-time postgraduate, apparently 9% less. The academic staff and the distant learners from all of the courses are approximately similar with 7% and 8%, respectively.

The satisfaction level of library users are divided into three: Very satisfied, Fairly satisfied, and Not satisfied. These levels of satisfaction depend on five factors. Most of the users are satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff though 5% out of 100% are not. On the other hand, 20% of users are unsatisfied with the service that is availability of journals and the reliability of wi-fi, holding 19% unsatisfaction level.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively addresses both parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the pie chart and the table. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant user group and overall satisfaction trends. Data is accurately reported, such as full-time undergraduates making up 44% and helpfulness of staff receiving the highest satisfaction at 95% very satisfied. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting the table details, such as misinterpreting the dissatisfaction percentages for journals and wi-fi. Nevertheless, key comparisons and features are highlighted well, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The report displays clear logical organisation with a recognizable introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each visual source. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'The second largest percentage'. Paragraphing is logical, separating the introduction/overview, the pie chart data, and the table data. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'The library users' at the start of multiple sentences. Progression is generally clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted with varying success, such as 'moderate lower', 'distant learners', and 'unsatisfaction level' (which should be 'dissatisfaction'). Phrasing like 'holds the least portion of it' and 'the service that is availability of journals' shows some awkwardness in collocation. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6 profile well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures (e.g., 'The part-time postgraduate users are moderately lower than the full-time postgraduate'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'satisfaction level of library users are' (subject-verb agreement error), 'academic staff holds' (should be plural or 'account for'), and 'holding 19% unsatisfaction level'. Despite these recurring minor errors, punctuation and sentence structures are generally controlled enough to ensure communication is not impeded.
