Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart provides information about the different categories of library users and table illustrates their satisfaction percentages.
Overall, full-time undergraduate students have the highest percentage followed by the full time postgraduate with second number. In table, the people who are very satisfied have high percentage as compared to the fairly satisfied and not satisfied.
After looking at the pie chart, the full time undergraduate students cover the almost half of the chart about 44% and postgraduate students have 25% on second number. The part-time postgraduate students show the average interest with 16%. The academic and distance learning have the lowest interest 7% and 8% respectively.
Furthermore, after analysing the table the people who are very satisfied have highest percentages like helpfulness of staff with 95%,library opening hours 65% and the remaining three categories are 50%,45% and 48% respectively. Fairly satisfied pupils have second number in table and availability of books with 40% and library opening hours and availibility of journals with same percentage of 35%. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student attempts to address both parts of the prompt by describing the pie chart on categories of library users and the table showing satisfaction levels. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, noting that full-time undergraduates form the largest group and that high satisfaction levels dominate the table. Key features are selected, such as full-time undergraduates at 44% and postgraduates at 25%, alongside the high satisfaction rating for staff helpfulness at 95%. However, the data reporting tends to be a bit mechanical and misses some significant comparisons, such as contrasting the high satisfaction categories with the notably lower figures for book and journal availability, or Wi-Fi reliability. The response meets all basic requirements, but lacks deeper extension in data selection, placing it at a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged into four paragraphs, providing a logical overall structure with an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph for the pie chart, and a body paragraph for the table. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'After looking at the pie chart', and 'Furthermore, after analysing the table'. However, some referencing is awkward or mechanical, such as 'with second number' and 'Fairly satisfied pupils have second number in table'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual prompts, but progression within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the organization is coherent enough to follow without difficulty, matching the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'categories', 'percentage', 'satisfaction percentages', and 'postgraduate students'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes marred by awkward collocation or imprecise word choice, such as 'cover the almost half of the chart' and 'pupils' used instead of 'users' or 'respondents'. Phrases like 'second number' are repetitive and unnatural. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. These characteristics place the lexical performance firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('After looking at the pie chart, the full time undergraduate students cover...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including missing articles ('in table', 'have lowest interest'), redundant words ('the full time postgraduate with second number'), and slight structural clumsiness ('The academic and distance learning have the lowest interest'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
