Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the pie chart and the table. The student accurately highlights that full-time undergraduates are the largest group of library users at 44%, while academic staff represent the smallest proportion at 7%. Key data from the satisfaction table are also reported, such as the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness at 95% and opening hours at 65%. An overview is provided at the end, summarising the main trends effectively. However, there are minor data inaccuracies in the body paragraph, such as stating '39% of customers are slightly satisfied' when the table shows 33% for fairly satisfied regarding wi-fi, and referencing 35% as 'halfly satisfied'. Nonetheless, the key information is well selected and supported with relevant figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is arranged coherently, with an introduction, clear body paragraphs separating the chart and table data, and an overall summary paragraph at the end. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'Overall'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are somewhat mechanical or awkwardly phrased, such as 'In last, 48%...' and 'play are mainly satisfied'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response logically, but the transitions between sentences within paragraphs could flow more naturally to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to surveys and statistics, such as 'proportion', 'users', 'satisfaction', and 'respectively'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary and lexical items, although some word choices and collocations are inaccurate, such as 'halfly satisfied' instead of 'fairly satisfied', 'consumers' instead of 'users' or 'respondents', and spelling errors like 'librabry'. Despite these lexical errors and awkward word choices, communication is generally not impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'while part-time post graduate and distance learning (all courses) are 16% and 8% respectively.' There are, however, several noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including incorrect comma placements (e.g., '65%, of users'), subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the peak users were... the least users are'), and preposition misuse. While these errors occur frequently, they do not severely impede overall communication, placing the writing comfortably at Band 6.
