Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart provides information about the categories of library users according to a survey conducted at the university; at the same time, the table shows data percentage of the satisfaction index of library users through various facilities provided by the library.

The library is in use by several students ranging from part-time to full-time undergraduates and postgraduates. The library user satisfaction in marked across various facilities provided, from its opening hours, availability of books and journals, etc.

Furthermore, it is shown that the highest usage of library is by full-time undergraduates, followed by full-time postgraduates with 44% and 25% respectively. The lowest usage is by the academic staff at 7% whereas with only 1% percentile more that is 8%, follows all the types of distance learning courses. Part-time postgraduates use the library only for 16% according to the survey. The highest satisfaction percantage is 95% due to the helpfulness of the staff, followed by 65% becaus of the library's opening hours. On the other hand, 20% of users are not satisfied with the availability of journals.

Moreover, we can observe that the users are either, very or fairly satisfied with the library's opening hours and the helpfullness of the staff, but none of them are not satisfyied. The most uneven distribution of satisfaction % is due the reliability of the wi-fi in the library.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of both the pie chart and the table. Key features are selected and reported, such as the highest and lowest categories of library users (full-time undergraduates at 44% and academic staff at 7%) and significant satisfaction figures like the 95% satisfaction rate for staff helpfulness. Comparisons are made appropriately, for instance noting the relationship between academic staff and distance learners. However, there are minor data inaccuracies, such as stating 'whereas with only 1% percentile more that is 8%, follows all the types of distance learning courses' which is slightly confused in phrasing, and a minor typo regarding the Wi-Fi data. Nevertheless, the response clearly addresses the prompt and presents a well-supported overview. Band score: 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, moving from an introductory description to category details and satisfaction percentages. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed with a very short second paragraph ('The library is in use by several students...'), and referencing is occasionally mechanical. Paragraph transitions could be smoother to establish a more natural progression throughout the report. Cohesion is generally adequate but displays some faultiness in structure. Band score: 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'satisfaction index', 'uneven distribution', and 'categories of library users'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'data percentage of the satisfaction index', 'satisfaction in marked', 'percantage' (spelling), 'becaus' (spelling), and 'satisfeyied' (spelling). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main features of the visual data. Band score: 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'The pie chart provides information about...; at the same time, the table shows...'). There are, however, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing prepositions or awkward constructions ('usage of library', 'satisfaction percantage is 95% due to the helpfulness', 'none of them are not satisfyied', 'due the reliability'). These errors require some effort to decode in places but do not completely obscure the meaning. Band score: 5.5.
