Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart and table illustrate the proportions of the results of survey of library users at a university.

Overall, Full time undergraduates accounted for highest proportion of library users, however distance learning stood at the lowest share. Moreover, greater proportion of users were seen very satisfied under each factor.

Furthermore, Full-time undergraduates stood at the highest share of 44%, followed by Full-time postgraduates at 25%. Part-time postgraduates accounted for 16%. However, Distance learning and Academic staff accounted for the smallest share of 8% and 7%, respectively.

Consequently, the users who were very satisfiesd showed a greater proportion as compared to not satisfied users. In very satisfiesd category, Helpfulness of staff accounted for the highest share of 95%, followed by library opening hours at 65%. Availability of journals and Reliability of wi-fi remained at a smallest share of 45% and 48%, respectively. The highest proportion of fairly satisfied usres were in Availability of books about 50%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the table. An adequate overview is provided at the beginning, noting the highest and lowest categories and the general satisfaction trend. Key data points are selected and reported accurately, such as full-time undergraduates representing 44% and helpfulness of staff recording the highest satisfaction level at 95%. However, there are minor data inaccuracies in the body paragraphs; for instance, the student states that 'Availability of books' had the highest proportion of fairly satisfied users at 50%, whereas the chart/table indicates 50% for very satisfied in opening hours or 40% for fairly satisfied in books. Despite this, the main trends are adequately captured, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall progression, moving from an introductory overview to the pie chart data and then the table data. Paragraphing is used to separate the different visual elements. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently', although some are used a bit mechanically or slightly unnaturally in context (e.g., 'Consequently'). Referencing is generally clear, but the logical link between sentences could be smoother. Overall, the organization is coherent enough to meet the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data reporting such as 'proportion', 'highest share', and 'accounted for'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including repeated typos like 'satisfiesd' and 'usres'. Attempts at less common vocabulary lead to slight inaccuracies, but the meaning remains clear throughout. This lexical control places the response firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'while', 'followed by', and subordinate clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as missing articles ('accounted for highest proportion', 'stood at smallest share') and punctuation slips. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the basic meaning is successfully conveyed. The grammatical range and accuracy are consistent with a Band 6 performance.
