Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to present information from both the chart and the table, the selection of data is somewhat erratic and lacks a fully developed overview. For instance, the opening sentences attempt an introduction, but they are vague and confusing ('The chart conduct that the result of survey'). Key features are mentioned, such as full-time undergraduates representing 44% and academic staff making up 7%, and some satisfaction figures are reported. However, the explanation of the data is hindered by poor phrasing and a lack of clear comparison between the categories. To move to a higher level, the response needs a more cohesive and comprehensive selection of main trends, ensuring all key components of the visual data are clearly summarised and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression. The essay is divided into brief paragraphs, but the logical link between sentences and ideas is frequently broken. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, relying heavily on words like 'moreover' and 'furthermore' to connect poorly structured clauses. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks clarity; for example, jumping abruptly between user categories and satisfaction ratings without a smooth transition. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. To improve, the writer should focus on logically grouping related data and using a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the report smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary use is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies on basic terminology from the prompt and makes noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'chart conduct' instead of 'chart illustrates', and 'availabilty of journels'. There are also frequent issues with phrasing, such as 'the chart suppose the distance learning users', which sounds unnatural and impedes smooth reading. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the visual data, inaccuracies in spelling and word form prevent a higher score. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use more precise reporting verbs and nouns, and ensure correct word forms and spelling throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'it is show that' and 'the chart conduct', as well as missing or incorrect auxiliary verbs. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to ungrammatical constructions like 'majority and minority staff between full-time undergraduate to academic staff'. Punctuation and prepositions inside grammatical patterns are also problematic. To improve in this area, the writer needs to work on basic sentence construction, ensure subject-verb agreement, and correctly form passive and active voice structures when reporting statistical data.
