Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table. An overview is attempted, and key figures such as the 44% for full-time undergraduates and 95% satisfaction for staff helpfulness are reported. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurate; for example, the student incorrectly states that part-time postgraduates are 25% when the data shows 16%, and claims that academic staff are the 'least interest in using library' while also listing distance learners at 8%. The selection of data points lacks full extension, meaning some comparisons are underdeveloped, placing the response solidly at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical separation into an introduction, overview, and distinct body paragraphs for the chart and table data. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'while', and 'furthermore' are used to structure the response. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and repetitive, and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as confusing pronoun usage and dense, run-on sentence structures that obscure the logical progression between ideas. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires smoother transitions to reach higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to percentages and survey categories. However, there is a limited range with frequent inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'most of library user' instead of users, 'least interest' instead of the least interested, and 'mid rang'. The student attempts less common vocabulary but makes noticeable errors that occasionally impede smooth reading. Spelling and morphological errors ('postgraduate student are use') restrict the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'full time undergraduate student are using', 'postgraduate student are use', and 'more then'. Punctuation is also problematic, with excessive and irregular spacing around commas and periods. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication entirely, their persistent frequency across basic structures prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
