Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover both the chart and the table, noting key proportions such as the 44% for full-time undergraduates and the high helpfulness rating of 95%. However, the overview is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear summary of the most striking overall trends. Furthermore, some data reporting contains inaccuracies, such as the claim that users are 'not satisfied with the library opening hours... with a 0% satisfaction', whereas the table actually shows 0% in the 'not satisfied' column and 65% as 'very satisfied'. This demonstrates a misunderstanding of the table data. Ideas are limited and under-developed, meaning the response addresses the task only partially rather than fully extending all relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic level of organisation, with the writing split into paragraphs dealing with the chart and the table separately, providing some overall logical arrangement. However, there is no clear overall progression connecting the pie chart proportions to the satisfaction metrics smoothly. Cohesive devices are handled rather mechanically or inaccurately, such as the abrupt use of 'Whereas,' at the start of sentences without proper clause connection, and repetitive sentence openings like 'The table shows...' and 'The users...'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leading to a choppy flow that impedes the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on simple, repetitive terms directly lifted from the prompt, such as 'chart', 'table', 'library users', and 'satisfaction'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'statisfaction', 'colums', 'helpfullness', 'categoris', and 'heapfullness'. Word choices are sometimes imprecise or awkward, such as describing satisfaction columns rather than categories, and these errors cause some difficulty and hesitation for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying predominantly on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at more complex sentences are largely absent, and simple sentences often contain frequent errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and singular/plural forms, such as 'the full-time postgraduate's', 'full time undergraduate students uses', and 'more than 40% users are'. Additionally, punctuation and spacing errors are widespread, including missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'staff,full-time', 'chart, the survey'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader.
