Student answer (Band 5.0)
THE PIE CHART ILLUSTRATES A SURVEY OF LIBRARY USERS AT AN UNIVERSITY.
AS WE SEE THE CHART WE CAN SEE THAT MOST OF THE STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED IN FULL-TIME UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES WHICH HAS THE MOST PERCENTAGE OF 44. SECONDLY WE SEE THE PERCENTAGE OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS WHICH IS 25. IF WE SEE FURTHUR WE SEE THE PART TIME POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS, DISTANCE LEARNING AND ACADEMIC STAFF FOLLOWING WITH THE PERCENTAGE OF 16,8 AND 7. OVERALL WE SEE THE UNDEGRDADUATE STUDENTS HAVE THE MOST PERCENTAGE IN THE UNIVERSITY.
ON THE OTHER HAND WE SEE ON THE TABLE HELPFULNESS OF STAFF HAS THE MOST SATISFACTION PERCENTAGE AND 5 PERCENT ARE FAIRLY SATISFIED. ON THE SECOND WE SEE LIBARARY OPENING HOURS WITH NUM OF 65 BUT FAIRLY STAISFIED PERCENTAGE OF 35. AT THIRD AND FOURTH WE SEE AVAILABILITY OF BOOKS AND JOURNALS FOLLOWING 50 AND 45. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by reporting some main features from both the pie chart and the table. For instance, the student correctly identifies that full-time undergraduates form the largest group at 44% and that staff helpfulness received the highest satisfaction rating at 95%. However, the overview is overly simplistic, and the writing is restricted to listing numbers without sufficient comparison or deep analysis. Key data points, such as the exact percentages for distance learning or the breakdown of satisfaction levels for wi-fi, are either lumped together or handled mechanically. To move to a higher band, the response needs to present a clearer, more cohesive overview and draw more meaningful comparisons across the data categories rather than simply recounting figures sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organization with a basic separation into a paragraph for the chart and a paragraph for the table, but there is no clear overall progression. The student relies heavily on repetitive and mechanical transitional phrases such as 'AS WE SEE THE CHART WE CAN SEE THAT', 'SECONDLY WE SEE', and 'IF WE SEE FURTHUR WE SEE'. Paragraphing is underutilized and writing entirely in capital letters severely disrupts the visual flow and structural presentation. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and inaccurately, which hinders the logical flow of ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer must use a wider and more natural variety of cohesive links, avoid redundant conversational filler phrases, and structure the response into logically connected paragraphs with clear progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, featuring repetitive basic structures such as 'percentage', 'rates', and 'see'. There are notable spelling errors and awkward word choices, such as 'LIBARARY' for 'library', 'FURTHUR' for 'further', and 'UNDEGRDADUATE' for 'undergraduate'. The student attempts some topic-specific terms like 'satisfaction', 'dissatisfied', and 'availability', but overall lexical control is weak, with errors causing some distraction for the reader. To reach the next band, the student should expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common synonyms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and repetitive sentence structures dominated by 'we see'. Attempts at more complex statements are largely missing or overly simplistic. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('an university' instead of 'a university'), incorrect prepositional use, and erratic capitalization throughout the entire text. These errors require the reader to decode the intended meaning. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a greater variety of complex sentence forms, ensure accurate article and preposition usage, and master basic sentence construction without relying on repetitive conversational framings.
