Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided pie chart illustrates data about the outcomes of a survey of people categorized by who visits the university's library, and the table gives information about visitors satisfaction.
Overall, it is clearly seen that the majority of library users are full-time undergraduate students, while the minority consists of academic staff. In addition, the percentage of satisfaction is high.
The number of undergraduate students enrolled on a full-time basis records the highest percentage, accounting for almost 45 percent, whereas the figure for full-time postgraduate students is half that amount, at 25%. Part-time postgraduates make up 16%. People who study online and workers of academia represent 8 and 7 percent, respectively.
As for the second table, 65 percent of visitors are very satisfied with the opening time of the library, and people who are quite satisfied with this factor are 35 percent. Almost everyone expressed satisfaction with the usefulness of staff, making up 95 percent. None of the individuals show dissatisfaction with these indicators. Almost half of the individuals are extremely satisfied with the availability of books, journals, and the reliability of the internet connection. Users reasonably pleased with book accessibility account for two-fifths, while journal access and the stability of Wi-Fi are approximately 35%. However, the percentage of dissatisfied students with books makes up 10 percent. The number of those not satisfied with journals and Wi-Fi account for about 20 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the key features from both the pie chart and the table. The main trends are clearly identified, such as full-time undergraduates forming the largest group and academic staff the smallest, alongside accurate reporting of the satisfaction metrics. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant data points, such as 'accounting for almost 45 percent' and '95 percent' for staff helpfulness. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or list data sequentially in places rather than fully synthesising every comparative element, which keeps the response at this solid level. To reach a higher standard, the data could be grouped more analytically to highlight broader relationships between user categories and satisfaction levels.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. The response is appropriately divided into introduction, overview, and separate body paragraphs for the chart and the table. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'In addition', 'As for the second table', and 'However'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical, particularly in the transition between sentences describing the table data. To bridge the gap to the next level, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive links flow more naturally and seamlessly without relying on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and paraphrasing prompt terminology with phrases like 'outcomes of a survey', 'minority consists of', and 'workers of academia'. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'usefulness of staff' instead of 'helpfulness of staff', and 'dissatisfied students with books' instead of 'students dissatisfied with books'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the limitations characteristic of this band level. Incorporating a wider variety of precise collocations and checking word forms would enhance the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases effectively, as seen in 'People who study online and workers of academia represent 8 and 7 percent, respectively.' There are some grammar errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'The number of those not satisfied with journals and Wi-Fi account for', where 'account' should be 'accounts'. Punctuation and article use are generally controlled, and errors are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should eliminate minor agreement slips and demonstrate a wider, more consistently error-free command of complex grammatical structures.
