Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of both the pie chart and the table while omitting a clear, cohesive overview. The student successfully identifies that full-time undergraduates form the largest group of library users at 44 percent, and attempts to report satisfaction metrics such as opening hours at 65 percent and staff helpfulness. However, the data reporting is often imprecise and incomplete. For instance, some proportions are described vaguely without accurate figures, and details regarding journal availability and wi-fi reliability lack precise synthesis. Furthermore, the overall selection of data tends to wander without a well-defined structure or a clear, overarching summary statement. To improve toward higher bands, the writer must ensure all key features across the visual data are clearly reported, supported by accurate figures, and introduced with a distinct, overarching summary paragraph that highlights the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation present, but the response lacks clear overall progression and logical flow. While the division into paragraphs roughly separates the user categories chart from the satisfaction table, the internal sequencing within paragraphs is disjointed and difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, or mechanical, leading to abrupt transitions between sentences, such as 'In first chart firstly...' and 'another graph show...'. Pronoun referencing and substitution are also weak, causing confusion regarding what specific figures refer to. Paragraphing is attempted, but the structural boundaries do not adequately separate distinct ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the response, ensure clear referencing, and structure the text with logical progression from an introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource used in this response is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'survey', 'academic staff', 'undergraduate', and 'satisfaction', but the range is basic and repetitive. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'larning' instead of learning, 'high' instead of higher, and 'others are not find it satisfied'. Spelling errors, while generally not impeding overall communication, occur frequently enough to highlight the restricted vocabulary control. To lift this criterion to the next level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of less common vocabulary and synonyms to describe data trends, such as 'proportion', 'majority', 'substantial', and 'proportionately', while improving word choice, collocation, and accurate spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and non-standard verb forms, such as 'this chart show', 'according the department and after survey', and 'wi-fi only few feels good'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and a lack of proper sentence demarcation that causes difficulty for the reader. To improve grammatical range and accuracy, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences using subordinate clauses, ensure correct verb tenses and agreement, pay careful attention to articles and prepositions, and refine punctuation control to reduce the frequency of basic errors.
