Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the outcomes of a study on the 5 categories of library users at a particular university, while the table displays proportions of the library user's satisfaction.
At a cursory glance, it is clearly evident that the largest category of library users involve full-time undergraduate students, whereas the academic staff comes in the least library goer group. Library user's satisfaction can be seen declining steadly across 5 aspects.
To begin with, it can be seen that the full-time undergraduate students were the most prominent group who visited library daily comprising 44% of the pie chart, whereas full-time postagraduate students were the second largest category consisting 25% of the chart. Furthermore, slighlty above the quarter of the users were part-time graduates having 16%: however, academic staff and distance learning displayed the least percentages of 8% and 7% respectfully.
The majority of library users were satisfied with helfulness of the staff by displaying the most number of the positive reponses from the visitors. Following this trend significant amount of the users voted positively for library opening hours, with 65% being very satisfied and 35% being fairly satisfied. In contrast, availability of books, journals and wi-fi showed the least percentages of satisfaction with 50%, 45% and 48% being very satisfied respectfully, and by having 40%, 35% and 33% percentages respectfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task, presenting an overview and reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. It highlights key data points such as the highest proportion of users being full-time undergraduates at 44% and the satisfaction ratings for staff helpfulness at 95%. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or inaccurately described, such as claiming users visited 'daily' when the chart simply measures user categories, and a minor confusion regarding the satisfaction trends where the writer states satisfaction 'declined steadily across 5 aspects' when the table actually shows varying positive percentages. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure all reported details strictly reflect the visual data without misinterpreting labels, and extend the comparisons between categories and satisfaction metrics more thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of ideas moving from the user categories to the satisfaction levels. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different visual elements. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'To begin with' and the somewhat repetitive use of 'respectfully' at the end of sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but the links between sentences could be more smoothly integrated to demonstrate more flexible control over cohesive devices. To achieve the next band level, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive features more naturally and ensure that transitions connect ideas with greater fluency and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic information about percentages and categories. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and synonyms, such as 'prominent', 'proportions', and 'outcomes'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that affect precision, including 'steadly' instead of steadily, 'postagraduate' instead of postgraduate, 'slighlty' instead of slightly, and the misuse of 'respectfully' instead of respectively. Additionally, some phrasing lacks natural collocation, such as referring to the academic staff as 'the least library goer group'. To move up to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, reduce spelling errors, and demonstrate greater accuracy in word choice and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as 'while the table displays' and 'whereas full-time postgraduate students were...'. There are some error-free sentences, and punctuation is generally handled adequately. Nevertheless, a number of grammatical errors persist, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the largest category of library users involve' instead of involves, and awkward prepositional usage such as 'satisfied with helfulness of the staff' missing an article. These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the writer should aim for greater control over complex sentence patterns, ensure strict subject-verb agreement, and pay closer attention to articles and prepositions within grammatical structures.
