Student answer (Band 7.5)
Overall, full-time undergraduate students made up the largest group of library users, while academic staff accounted for the smallest percentage. In addition, most users were satisfied with the services, especially the helpfulness of staff.
According to the pie chart, full-time undergraduate students represented 44% of library users. Full-time postgraduates accounted for 25%, while part-time postgraduates made up 16%. Distance learners represented 8% of users, and academic staff had the lowest percentage, at only 7%.
Looking at the table, 95% of users were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, while only 5% were fairly satisfied. Regarding library opening hours, 65% were very satisfied and 35% were fairly satisfied. For the availability of books, half of the users were very satisfied, while 40% were fairly satisfied and 10% were not satisfied.
However, satisfaction with journals and Wi-Fi was lower. About 20% of users were not satisfied with journal availability, while 19% were unhappy with Wi-Fi reliability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
Your response covers all parts of the task effectively, providing a clear overview followed by detailed reporting of the visual data. You successfully highlight key features from both the pie chart and the table, such as identifying the largest and smallest user groups (full-time undergraduates at 44% and academic staff at 7%) and accurately reporting satisfaction levels. The data is selected well and supported with precise figures, such as noting that 95% of users were very satisfied with staff helpfulness while 20% were dissatisfied with journal availability. To reach an even higher standard, you could weave the data comparisons together more fluidly, contrasting the higher satisfaction areas directly against the lower satisfaction metrics in a more synthesised manner, rather than separating the table data so distinctly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory overview paragraph, a dedicated paragraph for the pie chart data regarding user categories, and subsequent paragraphs addressing the table of satisfaction ratings. You use cohesive devices flexibly and appropriately, such as 'In addition', 'According to the pie chart', 'Looking at the table', and 'However', which help guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct aspects of the visual data. To push into higher bands, ensure that referencing and transitional phrases within paragraphs create an even tighter connection between the demographic breakdown and the corresponding satisfaction trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision when reporting data. Phrases such as 'made up the largest group', 'accounted for', 'represented', and 'regarding library opening hours' are used accurately. You also successfully incorporate less common vocabulary items like 'demographic' concepts or specific indicators of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Word choice and spelling are generally strong, with no distracting errors that impede communication. To achieve an even higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and precise collocation related to data trends, such as 'constitute the predominant share' or 'exhibit a contrasting level of dissatisfaction'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
You display a good variety of complex structures and maintain a high proportion of error-free sentences throughout your response. Your control of grammar and punctuation is strong, demonstrated through well-formed subordinate clauses and accurate comparative structures, such as 'while academic staff accounted for the smallest percentage' and 'while only 5% were fairly satisfied.' Verb tenses and prepositions are handled correctly when reporting statistical data. A few minor slips or limitations in structural variety persist, preventing a higher rating, but overall grammatical control is sound. To improve further, try integrating a wider range of advanced syntactic structures, such as participial phrases or passive constructions, while maintaining complete accuracy.
