Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart and table illustrate the categories of library users and users satisfaction at a university.

Overall, the full-time undergraduates account for the largest proportion of the total, whereas full-time postgraduates make up roughly a quarter of all members. Students together represent the major share of a membership. Furthermore, the largest proportions of users are satisfied by the helpfulness of staff and library opening hours.

Looking at the categories of library users, the students make up almost 85% of membership altogether. The full-time graduates account for the highest percentage at 44%, while the full-time postgraduates show the second highest position at 25%. The part-time postgraduate represent 16%, while the academic staff show at 7%. The distance learning comprise 8% of the total.

In terms of the users satisfaction, the library opening hours and the cooperative staff are the two highly satisfied factors, with 65% and 95% of users satisfaction, respectively. In addition almost half of the people are very satisfied from the availability of the books, journals, and the efficiency of the wi-fi. The customers with fairly satisfaction comprise percentages roughly between 33 and 40% in all categories except the helpfulness of staff, which account for only 5%. Notably, nearly 20% of the users are not satisfied with the availability of journals and the reliability of wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the chart and table and making relevant comparisons. An overview is present, highlighting key trends such as full-time undergraduates forming the largest demographic and satisfaction being highest regarding opening hours and staff helpfulness. While most data is accurately reported, there is a minor imprecision when stating that "full-time graduates account for the highest percentage" (when the chart specifies full-time undergraduates). Ideas are generally well-extended, though certain details could be more tightly integrated to fully achieve a higher standard.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is suitably divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph dedicated to the chart, and another to the table. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'In terms of' are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to cover the percentages and categories presented in the visual data. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary and phrases such as 'account for the largest proportion', 'major share', and 'reliability of wi-fi'. However, there are some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'users satisfaction' instead of 'user satisfaction', 'cooperative staff' instead of 'helpful staff', and 'fairly satisfaction' instead of 'fairly satisfied', which prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at structuring sentences effectively. There are some good examples of complex clauses, such as 'whereas full-time postgraduates make up roughly a quarter of all members'. However, a number of grammatical errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'The part-time postgraduate represent' and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'satisfied from the availability'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and these errors rarely impede communication.
