Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart and table illustrate the categories of library users and user satisfaction at a university.

Overall, the full-time undergraduates account for the largest proportion of the total, whereas full-time postgraduates make up roughly a quarter of all members. Students together represent a major share of a membership. Furthermore, the largest proportions of users are satisfied with the helpfulness of staff and library opening hours.

Looking at the categories of library users, the students make up almost 85% of membership altogether. The full-time graduates account for the highest percentage at 44%, while the full-time postgraduates show the second highest position at 25%. The part-time postgraduates represent 16%, while the academic staff show at 7%. Distance learning comprise 8% of the total.

In terms of the user satisfaction, the library opening hours and the cooperative staff are the two factors with which users are highly satisfied, with 65% and 95% of user satisfaction, respectively. In addition almost half of the people are very satisfied with the availability of the books, journals, and the efficiency of the wi-fi. The customers with fairly satisfaction comprise percentages roughly between 33 and 40% in all categories except the helpfulness of staff, which accounts for only 5%. Notably, nearly 20% of the users are not satisfied with the availability of journals and the reliability of wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the pie chart depicting the categories of library users and the table showing satisfaction levels. The overview clearly highlights the main trends, such as full-time undergraduates forming the largest proportion of members and users being generally very satisfied with staff helpfulness and opening hours. Key data points are accurately reported and compared, such as the 44% for full-time undergraduates and the 95% satisfaction rating for staff helpfulness. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean towards listing some specific percentages without fully extending the comparisons between categories, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer could provide a more integrated analysis of the relationships between user types and their specific satisfaction levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The writing demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph dedicated to user categories, and a final body paragraph focusing on user satisfaction. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', 'Looking at the categories', and 'In terms of' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although there is occasional slight mechanical phrasing, such as 'show at 7%', which is typical of this band level. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct aspects of the visual data, ensuring the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the writer to discuss percentages, proportions, and satisfaction levels with reasonable precision. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'proportion', 'represent', and 'efficiency', showing an awareness of academic style. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'full-time graduates' instead of 'full-time undergraduates', 'cooperative staff' instead of helpful staff, and the phrase 'the customers with fairly satisfaction comprise percentages', which slightly detracts from precision. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from achieving a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. The writer successfully employs complex structures such as relative clauses and comparative constructions, as seen in sentences like 'whereas full-time postgraduates make up roughly a quarter of all members.' There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as unnecessary articles ('the availability of the books', 'the efficiency of the wi-fi') and minor prepositions or pluralisation issues like 'fairly satisfaction' and 'Distance learning comprise'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the majority of sentences to remain clear and grammatically sound.
