Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially by summarizing some parts of the visual data, but the coverage is incomplete and features are under-developed. While the student correctly identifies the proportions of library user categories, such as full-time undergraduates at 44% and academic staff at 7%, the table detailing user satisfaction is handled mechanically and lacks a comprehensive overview. Some data points are reported without sufficient comparison or synthesis across categories. To move to a higher band, the response needs to select and report more key features across both the chart and the table, providing a clearer overall summary of the main trends without omitting significant data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with an introduction and body sentences, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is weak, with the response collapsing multiple distinct ideas and data sets into dense, poorly structured blocks. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, and repetitive, often relying on simple additive links or loose sequencing like 'after that is the number of' rather than sophisticated logical relationships. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of information. To improve, the writer should group related data into logical paragraphs, use clear topic sentences, and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Spelling mistakes such as 'survay' and 'catagorized', alongside inappropriate word forms like 'non satisfied' instead of 'dissatisfied' or 'not satisfied', detract from the quality of the response. The range of vocabulary is basic, heavily relying on direct repetition of words from the prompt and mechanical descriptions. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise academic vocabulary and paraphrase the source material more effectively while eliminating basic spelling and word-formation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses linked by commas or run-on structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a library users'), incorrect prepositions ('around at 7%', 'in avalibility'), and punctuation flaws such as missing full stops and run-on sentences. Attempts at complex sentences are largely absent or faulty, and basic agreement rules are occasionally violated. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student must demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, improve punctuation and sentence boundaries, and ensure greater accuracy in basic verb forms, articles, and prepositions.
