Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. An overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the generally high levels of satisfaction. Key data points are selected and compared, such as undergraduate students accounting for almost 45% and postgraduate students making up 25%. However, some parts of the data are treated more thoroughly than others; the body paragraph describing the satisfaction table tends to list percentages mechanically rather than fully synthesising the comparisons. To reach a higher level, the response would need to more fully develop the comparisons across categories and avoid listing individual figures without deeper analytical grouping.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text has a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from the pie chart data to the satisfaction table. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, chart details, and table details. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "Overall," "In addition," and "As for the second table." However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, and referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive or loose, such as beginning multiple sentences with "About" or "Only" in the final paragraph. To move up, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices to link clauses and sentences more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main statistical trends using terms like "proportion," "majority," and "minority." The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "categorised," "accounts for," and "satisfaction." However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing "illustrates about the outcomes" instead of "illustrates the outcomes," and omitting words in phrases like "with factor." Spelling and word choice are generally clear enough not to impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and flexible range of lexical items with fewer collocation and preposition errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures effectively, such as "while the minority consists of academic staff" and "students who study online." There are some grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions and articles, such as "As for the second table" and minor punctuation issues. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured and communication remains clear. To reach a higher standard, the writer should aim for a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over grammatical patterns and prepositions.
