Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data, providing a clear overview and highlighting key features such as the dominant undergraduate group and the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness. All categories from the pie chart and satisfaction ratings from the table are reported accurately and supported with correct figures, such as 44% for full-time undergraduates and 95% for staff helpfulness. The comparisons between categories and satisfaction levels are well-drawn. While the ideas are relevant and generally well-extended, some parts of the response lean slightly towards a mechanical listing of statistics rather than fully developing the analytical comparisons, which places the task achievement score solidly within this level. To reach higher bands, the writer could integrate the data more fluidly by analysing broader trends rather than detailing every individual percentage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and logical progression of ideas. The writer effectively uses an introductory paragraph, an overall summary, and two body paragraphs dedicated respectively to the user categories and the satisfaction ratings. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'followed by', 'whereas', and 'In terms of', which help guide the reader through the data. However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct datasets, showing strong control over the macro-structure of the report. For further improvement, the writer should employ a wider variety of transitional phrases and ensure seamless transitions between sentences to enhance the flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and survey findings with words such as 'proportion', 'categories', 'satisfaction rate', and 'respectively'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'availibility' instead of 'availability'. Collocations are generally functional, but lack the precision and sophistication seen at higher bands. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, but repetitive phrasing (such as the frequent reuse of 'satisfaction' and 'users') limits lexical flexibility. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a broader range of precise synonyms and academic lexical items, while ensuring accurate spelling and natural word combinations throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and relative clauses, such as in the sentence beginning with '44% of the library users are full-time undergraduate which is the highest...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, notably subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The pie chart and the table depicts' instead of 'depict') and missing articles ('full time undergraduate' instead of 'a full-time undergraduate'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are clear and accurate. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to eliminate basic agreement and article errors, and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical structures with error-free execution.
