Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the table. An overview is provided right at the beginning, noting that full-time undergraduates accounted for the largest proportion and academic staff the lowest, while helpfulness of staff achieved the highest satisfaction. Key data points are correctly cited, such as the 44% for undergraduates and 95% for staff helpfulness. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; some categories like distance learning and part-time postgraduates are only briefly mentioned with basic figures rather than being fully explored through meaningful comparisons. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend the comparisons across both visual datasets more deeply and ensure every highlighted feature is fully elaborated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the chart data and the table data, establishing a logical structure. The writer attempts to use cohesive devices to guide the reader, employing transition phrases like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion occasionally feels mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'While, academic staff listed for the lowest' and 'The one forth area is held by Full-time postgraduate'. Paragraphing is present, though the paragraphs could be better structured to balance the transition between the two distinct data sources. Referencing and logical progression are generally maintained, but refining the transitional phrases and ensuring smoother flow between sentences would enhance the overall readability.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used to communicate the information effectively, with appropriate terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'satisfaction level'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and functional reporting phrases, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'table chart' instead of just 'table', 'academic staff listed for the lowest' where 'accounted for' or 'stood at' would be more natural, and spelling slips like 'one forth' instead of 'one fourth' and 'fairy satisfied' instead of 'fairly satisfied'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score by demonstrating occasional imprecision in handling lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures. However, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing are present throughout the text. There are issues with preposition usage and verb patterns, such as 'were the most satisfied by helpfulness of staff' instead of 'with the helpfulness', and 'made up for the highest percentage' rather than 'made up the highest percentage'. Additionally, punctuation and article usage show inconsistency, and tense or agreement slips occur, such as 'availability of books and reliability of wi-fi has' where a plural verb is required. These frequent minor errors mean that while communication is generally achieved, grammatical control remains limited.
