Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table, and it presents a clear overall trend. Key features are selected, such as full-time undergraduates dominating the chart at 44% and academic staff representing the minority at 7%, alongside satisfaction ratings like the high helpfulness of staff at 95%. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the text states that '35 users feel library opening hours is fairly satisfied,' misinterpreting the percentage data from the table as absolute user counts, and percentages are occasionally omitted when describing the satisfaction metrics. To achieve a higher band, all data points must be reported with strict statistical accuracy without confusing percentages with headcounts, and features should be extended with more thorough comparisons across categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to the chart and table data respectively. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between ideas, such as 'Meanwhile,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In contrast.' However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, particularly in sentences like 'distance learners from all courses using half of the number of part-time postgraduates,' which lacks a clear finite verb structure and disrupts logical progression. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but to move further up, logical sequencing and cohesive referencing within sentences need greater fluidity and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying general concepts and comparisons using terms like 'proportion,' 'dominate,' and 'category.' The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word forms. Examples include 'toatl' instead of total, 'satistfied' and 'safisfied' instead of satisfied, 'Helfulness' instead of helpfulness, and 'journels' instead of journals. Furthermore, phrasing such as 'users are very satisfied with Helfulness of staffs' demonstrates awkward collocation and pluralization errors. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand the range of lexical items, ensure correct word formation, and eliminate spelling mistakes that detract from the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response utilizes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability with structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors in subject-verb agreement and missing verb forms, such as 'academic staff is the least' instead of 'academic staff are the fewest,' and 'distance learners... using half of the number,' which lacks a main verb. Preposition and article usage also exhibit flaws, as seen in 'at quarter of total samples.' These errors do not generally impede communication, but they persist throughout the text. Reaching a higher band requires a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and better control over basic grammatical agreements and verb structures.
