Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping short at only 93 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the pie chart—such as identifying full-time undergraduates as the largest group at 44% and noting the percentages for academic staff and distance learners—the table data regarding library user satisfaction is completely omitted from the summary. To improve, the writer must ensure all visual components provided in the prompt are addressed and that the output satisfies the standard word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response shows an attempt at organisation by grouping sentences into an introduction, an overview, and body details, but the overall progression lacks clarity and logical flow. Paragraphing is rudimentary, and cohesive devices are minimal or misused, such as repetitive phrasing ('In pie chart show', 'Highly users'). Referencing and transitions between ideas are frequently faulty, meaning the information does not flow smoothly. To move up, the writer needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices accurately and structure the response with clear logical links between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, featuring frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'highly users' instead of 'the highest proportion of users' and 'respectly' instead of 'respectively'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying simple facts, but noticeable errors occur when attempting less common structures. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing statistical data and eliminate basic word-formation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie chart describe', 'Distance learning and academic staff users... is') and structural awkwardness ('Full-time postgraduate people use 1/4 part'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a mix of accurate complex sentences and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules such as tense consistency and article usage.
