Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of both the pie chart and the table, selecting key features such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates at 44% and highlighting satisfaction levels regarding opening hours and staff helpfulness. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the pie chart data is reported accurately with specific percentages, some details from the table are treated rather briefly or lack full comparative expansion. For instance, the discussion of satisfaction categories could be integrated more cohesively with broader trends. The response meets all basic requirements for a solid performance at this level, though moving to a higher band would require more fully developed comparisons and a more comprehensive analysis of all significant data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the introductory statement, body details, and concluding points. Information is generally ordered logically, beginning with user categories and moving through satisfaction metrics. However, cohesion relies at times on mechanical transitions, such as 'Also' and 'Regarding wifi', which makes the flow feel slightly disjointed. Paragraphing could be managed more effectively to separate the pie chart data from the table data more distinctly. Reference words are used, but referencing is occasionally repetitive. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother progression between sentences and ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical information using terms like 'proportion', 'respectively', and 'satisfaction'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dominance' or appropriate modifiers, but encounters occasional lexical inaccuracies, including spelling errors like 'satsified' and 'availabilty', as well as awkward phrasing such as 'helping nature of the staff'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a restricted precision in word choice and collocation. To reach a higher lexical band, the student should expand their range of functional synonyms and academic collocations while eliminating basic spelling and word-choice slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures such as '44% of the users were undergraduate students, followed by... at 25% and 16% respectively'. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('largest proportion of library', 'availability of journal') and minor preposition or agreement slips like 'Distance learning and academic staff represents'. However, these errors occur infrequently and rarely impede overall communication. The punctuation is generally stable. To secure a higher band, the writer should aim for a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, ensuring better control over articles, singular/plural agreement, and verb forms.
