Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart and table provide the information about the proportion of users at a university librar, with the pie chart illustrating the share of different categories of users and the table presenting the satisfaction of the users at a university.

Overall, in the pie chart, percentage of full-time students is huge as compared with others. In the table chart, students are fulfilment based on helpfulness of staff.

In the pie chart, full- time undergraduate percentage is almost half of the entirely. Secondly,full-time postgraduate students accounted for a quarter of the total. Moreover, there are 7%,8%and 16% respectively academic staff, distance learning and part time postgraduate.

In the table chart, in the availability of journals the satisfaction number is fewer as compared to others. The not satisfied data negligible number. Most of the users are satisfied. Mid range of satisfied number measurable. The percentage range in library is manageable, so that students are above the range.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task partially. While it attempts to cover both the pie chart and the table, the selection of main features is basic and lacks depth. For instance, the overview provided in the second paragraph ('percentage of full-time students is huge as compared with others') is overly simplistic and vague. Furthermore, some of the descriptions regarding the table, such as 'The not satisfied data negligible number' and 'Mid range of satisfied number measurable', are unclear and fail to accurately report or compare the statistical details presented in the visual data. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clearer overview of the main trends and select more key features to compare effectively without relying on vague summaries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Information is generally grouped logically, with the pie chart discussed before the table. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical. The student relies heavily on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'In the pie chart' and 'In the table chart' at the start of sentences, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion needs to be smoother and more varied to guide the reader through the data comparisons more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic points. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'illustrating', and 'accounted for', but also makes noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as writing 'librar' instead of 'library', 'students are fulfilment based on' instead of 'students reported high satisfaction with', and 'entirely' instead of 'total'. There is also a spelling error with 'part time'. These inaccuracies and limited lexical range cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher score in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few awkward complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing or incorrect prepositions, articles, and awkward phrasing, such as 'percentage of full-time students is huge as compared with others' and 'there are 7%,8%and 16% respectively academic staff'. Punctuation and spacing errors are also present, such as missing spaces after commas in numerical lists ('7%,8%and 16%'). These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally decode the meaning, characteristic of this grammatical level.
