Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of the chart and table and making relevant comparisons. For example, the student correctly identifies that full-time undergraduates form the largest group of users at 44 percent and that academic staff make up the smallest proportion at 7 percent. An overview is present, highlighting the highest and lowest categories. However, some ideas are under-developed or less fully covered, particularly in the reporting of the satisfaction table where figures are occasionally confused or repetitive, such as the mixed mention of library opening hours and staff helpfulness. To reach a higher level, all key data points should be selected and reported with greater precision and extended comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body details. However, progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical or faulty referencing and abrupt transitions between sentences. For instance, moving abruptly from category percentages to satisfaction ratings without a clear transitional sentence disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is present, but grouping related information together could be improved. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or repetitively, such as the repeated use of 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover'. Improving logical sequencing and transitional phrasing would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'scholars', and 'availability'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that stem from word choice and spelling errors, such as 'liberary', 'relaible', and 'conection'. Some phrases are slightly unnatural, such as 'day scholars' or 'professors consists of only 7% lower percentage of all'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. Incorporating a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with accurate spelling and collocation would lift the response to the next level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like relative clauses ('who was enrolled', 'who study full-time'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'The figure and table illustrates' and 'least number of users are', as well as missing articles ('with only 10% who are not satisfied'). While these errors are present, they rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles.
