Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview of the chart and table but failing to report key features and clear comparisons. The student notes the main categories of library users, such as full-time undergraduates at 44%, and touches on satisfaction rates like the high satisfaction for staff helpfulness at 95% and lower satisfaction for journals. However, the data reporting is limited and lacks precise comparisons across categories. While the main parts of the prompt are acknowledged, the ideas remain under-developed and general, lacking the specific analytical depth required for a higher band. Nine words copied directly from the prompt were not counted toward the minimum length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently throughout the response. The text is presented as a single dense block without appropriate paragraphing to separate the chart description from the table details. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or inaccurate, such as repetitive transitions like 'In this chart' and 'This table described'. Referencing is often unclear, leaving the progression of ideas disjointed and making it difficult for the reader to follow a logical structure from the pie chart data to the satisfaction table.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'consequence of a survey' instead of 'results', 'users are divides' (a word-form error), and phrases like 'users are much satisfied' or 'average satisfied'. While the student attempts to use topic-related terms like 'undergraduate', 'postgraduate', and 'satisfaction', frequent errors in word formation and collocation cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response employs a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that result in faulty phrasing. There are persistent errors in agreement, articles, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'In this chart it distributed', 'services by library also shown', 'Library users gets', and 'This conclude'. These frequent grammatical errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar firmly in the lower bands.
