IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the proportion of library users at a university and the chart represents the satisfaction rate of library users according to a survey.

Overall, it is clear that the full-time undergraduate students made up the largest proportion of users, while the academic staff had the lowest proportion. Meanwhile, the helpfulness of the staff and library opening hours satisfied most of the library users, whereas the unavailablity of journals, and unrealiablity of wifi was the main reason for dissatisfaction.

Looking first at the categories of users, the full time undergaduates accounted for the largest share of proportion at 44%, followed by the full-time post graduates at 25%. In addition, the academic staff represented the smallest share at just 7%, followed closely by distance learning at 8% and finally, the part-time post graduates share at 16%.

Turning to the library user satisfaction survey, helpfulness of the staff followed by library opening hours had the most users satisfied at 95% to 65% respectively. However, the unavailablity of journals disappointed 20% of people, and had a satisfaction rate of 45% similar to availablity of books at at 50 % and realiblity of wifi at 48%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by successfully reporting the main features from both the chart and the table. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key trends such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the main areas of user satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Key data points are accurately selected and supported with figures, such as the 44% for full-time undergraduates and the 95% satisfaction rate for staff helpfulness. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean towards listing data without fully extending every comparison, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, all core requirements of the prompt are satisfactorily met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory overview, a detailed breakdown of user categories in the third paragraph, and a focus on satisfaction metrics in the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, employing transition phrases like "Overall", "Looking first at", and "Turning to the library user satisfaction survey". Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and referencing between sentences remains clear. While some cohesive mechanisms could be more fluid or varied to achieve higher bands, the overall structure provides a coherent and easy-to-follow layout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to describe percentages, categories, and survey results effectively. Words such as "proportion", "satisfaction rate", and "dissatisfaction" are employed appropriately. However, the response contains several spelling errors and lexical inaccuracies, such as "unavailablity", "unrealiablity", "undergaduates", and "realiblity". There are also minor collocational slips like "at at 50 %". These vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at this level, but they prevent a higher score due to a lack of precision and control over less common items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response utilises a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures such as subordinate clauses ("while the academic staff had the lowest proportion", "where the unavailablity of journals... was the main reason"). There are frequent error-free sentences, and good control is shown over basic structures. However, a few minor errors persist, such as article omissions or awkward phrasing like "share of proportion" and numerical prepositions ("at at 50 %"). Because these grammar and punctuation errors rarely impede communication and the sentence structures show a reasonable blend of complexity, the response comfortably sits at the midpoint between bands.
