Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the table, selecting key data such as the 44% figure for full-time undergraduates and the 95% satisfaction rate for helpfulness of staff. However, some parts are more fully covered than others, and certain details are under-developed or imprecise, such as referring to journals as 'ournals' and missing specific percentages for some satisfaction categories. An overview is attempted at the beginning, but it is somewhat fragmented, which places the response at this level. To reach higher bands, all key trends should be synthesised into a clearer, more comprehensive overview and supported with fully accurate data reporting without omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, attempting to group information logically by discussing the user categories first and the satisfaction survey second. However, progression is disrupted by mechanical and faulty cohesion, as well as a lack of clear paragraphing and transitional phrases between sentences. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance in sentences like 'At a glance reveal that...', which lacks a proper subject and makes the flow awkward. To improve, the writer needs to use cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that ideas are connected smoothly with clear paragraph breaks separating different visual data sets.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic points about percentages and satisfaction levels using terms such as 'proportion', 'satisfaction', and 'availability'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'mjor' instead of 'major', 'conserved' instead of 'accounted for', and 'ournals' instead of 'journals'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but these lexical errors occasionally cause minor hesitation for the reader. To achieve a higher band, a wider range of precise vocabulary with correct spelling and natural collocations is required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'The pie chart and table illustrates' (singular verb with plural subject), 'full time undergraduate utilize' (missing plural and article), and 'user very satisfied from' (missing auxiliary and preposition misuse). While these errors rarely impede overall communication entirely, they persist throughout the text. To progress, the writer must improve grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding verb agreements, prepositions, and complete sentence structures.
