Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the pie chart and the table, but the coverage is partial and lacks proper development. While the main features of the pie chart are mentioned, such as the highest proportion being full-time undergraduates at 44 percent, the description of the table data is incomplete and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the text claims that 20 percent of students are unsatisfied with the availability of journals from the library incharger, and that 40 percent are not satisfied with books, but it overlooks key data points such as the high satisfaction rates for library opening hours and staff helpfulness. Furthermore, the selection of data is somewhat mechanical, presenting isolated figures without offering a comprehensive overview or making meaningful comparisons between the different categories and survey results as required by the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some organization with a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence, but it lacks clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes inaccurate, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'Firstly', 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Also' to connect sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is disjointed; for example, mixing specific survey percentages immediately after discussing user categories without a smooth logical transition. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as the sudden reference to the 'library incharger' in the fourth paragraph which does not link back clearly to the provided data. Overall, the flow of information is mechanical rather than naturally progressive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede communication or cause strain for the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'categories', 'proportion', and 'satisfaction', but makes frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'survey result of the university students who are using library' instead of 'survey results of library users', and 'prefered distance learning' with a spelling error. Phrases like 'satisfied from the staff' and 'unsatisfied from the journals' demonstrate a lack of control over appropriate prepositions and word forms. While the basic message is conveyed, the restricted range and frequent lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The grammatical structures used are limited mostly to simple sentences and basic attempts at complex forms, which are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in verb tenses and agreement, such as 'The pie chart and table illustrates' where a plural verb is required, and missing articles throughout the text, such as 'table shows' instead of 'the table shows'. Punctuation and prepositional usage within grammatical patterns also show persistent errors, for example, missing commas in compound structures and incorrect prepositions following adjectives. Although some sentences are understandable, the frequency of grammatical errors and the lack of a wider variety of error-free complex structures restrict the overall accuracy of the writing.
