Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the prompt. While the student attempts to summarise both the pie chart and the table, the information presented is very limited and contains inaccuracies, such as stating that there are 'five steps' in the pie chart instead of categories. The overview is rudimentary, and the description of the table is abruptly cut off mid-sentence ('35% of Fairly satisfied'). Furthermore, key features of the satisfaction data, such as the highest rating for helpfulness of staff or the lowest ratings for journals and wi-fi, are completely omitted. To move up, the student must provide a more complete and accurate overview of all parts of the visual data without missing major trends or numerical comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with attempts at paragraphing and introductory signposting such as 'Overall' and 'First and formost'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the mechanical, conversational transition phrases like 'know we will discuss about table' disrupt the academic tone. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are repetitive or used inappropriately. Paragraphing is also erratic, with single-sentence paragraphs breaking the flow of ideas. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing between paragraphs, use a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices, and maintain a consistent, formal academic style throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as misspelling 'catagories' as 'catagories', 'tabel' as 'tabel', 'opnening' as 'opnening', and 'greate intrest' instead of interest. The student repeats basic words like 'chart', 'section', and 'intrest' frequently rather than using synonyms or precise descriptive language. While the meaning can generally be parsed despite these flaws, the range is restricted. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items accurately, and eliminate spelling and word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent grammatical errors impede communication at times, including preposition errors ('intrest in librarys' instead of in libraries), missing articles ('a tabel also containing'), subject-verb agreement issues, and incomplete sentence fragments such as 'and 35% of Fairly satisfied'. Punctuation is also weak, marked by comma splices and run-on structures. To progress, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures, improve control over articles and prepositions, and ensure that every sentence is grammatically complete and punctuated correctly.
