IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the different students using the library and the table demonstrates how content the library users are with the library.
At an overall glance, it can be seen the majority of the library users are full time undergraduate students. They are followed by full-time and part-time postgraduate students. The rest of the usage is covered by distance learners and academic staff. From the table, it can be inferred that most of the library users are satisfied with the library services, while a few are dissatisfied.
From the chart, we can see that 44 percent of the library is occupied by full-time undergraduate students. The next biggest users of the library are the full-time and part-time postgraduate students, taking up 25 and 16 percent of the share respectively. The remaining 15 percent is used by the distance learners and the faculty, with the distance learners just edging out on the percentage share.
Library user satisfaction was assessed on five metrics, that is opening hours, staff helpfulness, book availability, obtainable journals and wi-fi robustness. The table shows the most poorly performing metric is the journal availablitiy, with 20 percent people not happy. The wi-fi reliability was next most cause of dissatisfaction with 19 percent people unhappy. The staff of the library were the best performing category with 95 percent of the people very satisfied with their help. 65 percent of the users were very happy with the opening hours, with the rest moderately satisfied. Half of the users with very content with the books on offer but 10 percent of the users were not happy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the pie chart and the table. An adequate overview is provided at the beginning, noting that full-time undergraduates are the largest group of library users and that overall satisfaction is high. Key data points are accurately reported and compared, such as the 44 percent share for full-time undergraduates and the 95 percent satisfaction rating for staff helpfulness. However, some ideas show a slight tendency to over-generalize or lack full extension, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band level. For instance, the remaining percentage calculation for distance learners and faculty could have been integrated more seamlessly, and minor details in the satisfaction metrics are somewhat casually described. Nevertheless, the core requirements of presenting an overview, reporting key figures, and making relevant comparisons are successfully met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The text maintains a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and general overview, followed by a body paragraph detailing the chart, and a final body paragraph discussing the table data. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader, such as 'At an overall glance', 'From the chart', and 'Library user satisfaction was assessed'. While the referencing and paragraphing are generally clear, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their introduction of new points (e.g., repeatedly starting sentences with 'From the chart' or 'The table shows'). Overall, the arrangement of information is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a smooth flow of ideas from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the statistical information about library users and satisfaction levels. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and functional phrasing, such as 'edging out on the percentage share', 'metrics', and 'robustness'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'availablitiy' instead of availability, 'journal availablitiy', and referring to users as being 'very content' or 'moderately satisfied' where alternative collocations might be more precise. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical band six profile where lexical control lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively. There is evidence of good control over basic structures and verb tenses when describing survey results. However, some grammatical errors persist, such as prepositions and phrasing within complex patterns (e.g., 'with 20 percent people not happy' instead of 'with 20 percent of people being unhappy' or 'with 20 percent of people unhappy', and 'Half of the users with very content' instead of 'were very content'). Punctuation and article use also contain minor lapses. These errors occur across a mix of structures but rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the expected range.
