Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the visual data by reporting category percentages and satisfaction levels, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, finishing at only 125 words once prompt copying is accounted for. While an overview is attempted and key data points such as the highest and lowest user categories are highlighted, some details are underdeveloped. Specifically, the table data regarding dissatisfaction and neutral categories is incomplete, and comparisons could be extended further. To reach a higher level, the response must expand its analysis of the data and satisfy the length requirement fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction and overview to specific breakdown paragraphs for the chart and table. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is rather basic and mechanical. For instance, sentences rely heavily on direct data reporting rather than sophisticated transitional phrasing to link ideas fluidly. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of extended cohesive links prevents the progression from feeling completely natural. To improve, the writer should integrate more varied cohesive devices and structure paragraphs more cohesively around thematic comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and categories with terms such as "proportion", "accounted for", and "respectively". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, and minor errors in word choice or phrasing are minimal and do not impede communication. However, the range of vocabulary remains somewhat repetitive, relying frequently on basic reporting verbs and nouns like "figure" and "proportion". To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a wider variety of synonyms and less common lexical items related to data reporting, such as "constitute", "represent", or "marginal majority".
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively, as seen in "The proportion of full-time undergraduates who used the library was the highest". There are some minor grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as the missing full stop at the end of the final sentence, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures consistently and maintain strict grammatical accuracy throughout the text.
