IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart represents the percentage distribution of groups of the library users at a university and the table provides data on the proportion of satisfied library users.
In the pie chart, it can be seen that the dominant sector contributing with 44% in using library comprised of full-time undergraduate students and the minor sector with least contribution is the teaching staff of university with about 7% of the total users. Another major contribution accounting for 25% is by the full-time postgraduate student of the university with 16% of the part-time postgraduate students visiting the library. Students from all other cources contribute only 8% of the library users.
In the table depicting information about the contentment of the students using library, most of the students were satisfied with the cooperative library staff and the flexible opening hours of library with 95% and 65% respectively. Accessibilty to different books compelled the most satisfied user with 40% and least unsatisfied users with 10%. However, the dissatisfaction of library users from the unavailability of journals and limited access to internet service had the most share in the overall library user satisfaction survey, contributing almost 20% and 19% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. However, it exhibits some weaknesses in data selection and interpretation. For instance, the writer states that 'Accessibilty to different books compelled the most satisfied user with 40%', which confuses the percentage of 'fairly satisfied' users (40%) with the overall finding. Furthermore, while an overview is attempted in the opening sentence, the main trends—such as the clear dominance of full-time undergraduates and the overwhelmingly positive satisfaction ratings for staff and opening hours—are not fully developed or synthesised into a strong, clear summary. This places the response firmly at the lower-middle level for this criterion, as some details are unclear or under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the pie chart to the table. Information is divided into clear paragraphs, and the writer uses cohesive devices such as 'In the pie chart', 'Another major contribution', and 'However' to guide the reader through the data. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent it from reaching a higher level. The bridging between sentences works well enough to maintain readability, ensuring the text meets the requirements for a solid performance in this area.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical concepts with terms like 'percentage distribution', 'proportion', and 'dominant sector'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'contentment' and 'unavailability', showing an awareness of style. However, there are some inaccurate word choices and awkward collocations, such as 'compelled the most satisfied user' and 'cources' (spelling error), which slightly impede precise communication. Despite these minor slips, the lexical range remains sufficient to accomplish the descriptive purpose of the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'In the pie chart, it can be seen that the dominant sector...'. There are several grammatical errors present, including missing articles ('the teaching staff of university', 'opening hours of library'), preposition misuse ('dissatisfaction of library users from'), and awkward relative clauses. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the basic meaning of the sentences remains clear. This reflects a typical mix of error-prone complex structures characteristic of this grammatical level.
