Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the chart and the table. It provides a clear overview and highlights key data points, such as full-time undergraduates representing the largest group of library users at 44%, and the high satisfaction levels regarding staff helpfulness. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed or less fully explained, preventing it from reaching a higher band. For example, the comparisons across different satisfaction categories in the table are described broadly rather than fully synthesised with precise percentages. Data is accurately reported overall, such as noting that 10 people were dissatisfied with books, though minor inaccuracies in interpreting the scale occur. To reach the next level, the response would need to more fully develop the comparisons and ensure every highlighted trend is backed by a more comprehensive overview of the data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the chart and table respectively. Information is generally easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is mostly clear. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases such as "While," and "On the other hand" are used awkwardly at the beginning of sentences where they disrupt the flow rather than connect clauses smoothly. Referencing and paragraph transitions could also be refined to enhance readability. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally without overusing or mispunctuating conjunctions, ensuring a seamless logical progression throughout the entire text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as "proportion," "satisfaction level," and "availability." However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices that detract from precision. Examples include "full-time under and postgraduates" (an informal truncation), "are contributing with their maximum interest," "are resulted for around 25%," and "part-time postgraduates values shows." Furthermore, treating percentage figures as number of people in the final sentence ("with only ten people not satisfied") indicates a misreading of the data percentages. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a limited control over collocation and word form. To reach the next band, the writer should use a more precise vocabulary range and avoid awkward phrasing or unnatural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. There are several grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, and agreement that persist throughout the text. Examples include "The chart and table illustrates" (subject-verb agreement error), "distant learning courses by around 7%" (missing prepositional context), and misuse of punctuation around transition words. Although these errors rarely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to characterize this band. The student attempts complex sentences, but structural awkwardness often reduces their accuracy. To improve to a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences, exercise tighter control over subject-verb agreement and prepositional patterns, and refine punctuation around dependent clauses.
