Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by successfully reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. An overview is provided that captures the general trends, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates in library usage and the high satisfaction levels regarding staff helpfulness. Key data points are selected and compared, for instance noting that full-time undergraduates accounted for 44% of the total while academic staff comprised only 7%. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or present data mechanically in places without fully synthesising all comparisons, sitting comfortably at this level where all parts are addressed but some elements of extension and support are still developing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing the specific data for the chart and table respectively. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the information, such as phrases like 'Overall,' 'By looking at the pie chart more carefully,' and 'On the library user satisfaction's table.' While the paragraphing and sequencing are coherent, referencing is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences lack the seamless flexibility required for higher bands, reflecting solid performance across the criteria with clear structural awareness.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common and topic-specific terms such as 'undergraduates,' 'postgraduates,' 'satisfaction,' and 'availability.' However, there are noticeable lexical and word choice inaccuracies, such as writing 'very satisfies' instead of 'very satisfied' and using 'picture' instead of 'chart.' Spelling and word-form errors, like 'fulltime' and 'part time' without consistent hyphenation, occasionally surface. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the response to this band because the lexical control lacks the precision and flexibility seen at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the table', 'the availability'), incorrect comma splices, and faulty prepositional or parallel structures in sentences like 'Availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi had...' followed by mixed percentages. Although these errors do not impede overall communication and you can follow the meaning easily, they persist frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from rising into higher bands where error-free complex sentences predominate.
