IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart and table display the categories of library users and their satisfaction level in percentage, as a result of a survey.
Overall, the share of full-time undergraduates is relatively higher than that of other users. However, the proportion of academic staff accounted for just 7 %. Additionally, most of the library users are very satisfied, which is evident from the satisfaction percentage.
There are five categories of library users, including academic staff and full-time undergraduates, which account for the minimum and maximum ratios. Furthermore, full-time postgraduates constitute one quarter of the whole count. However, distance learning, including all courses, accounts for 8%, and part-time postgraduates constitute twice the number of distance learning students.
The library user satisfaction percentage is highest due to the helpfulness of staff, which contributes to 95%. Although 0% are in the not satisfied category due to library opening hours and staff helpfulness, the category of very satisfied users is the highest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting key features from both the pie chart and the table. The writer successfully highlights the main proportions in the chart, such as full-time undergraduates accounting for the largest share at 44 percent and academic staff making up the minimum at 7 percent. Furthermore, relevant comparisons are made, noting that part-time postgraduates constitute twice the number of distance learning students. However, some areas remain under-developed. While satisfaction data is mentioned, the integration of the table's specific metrics could be more thorough, as certain details regarding book and journal availability are omitted. Nevertheless, the main trends are adequately covered, placing the performance comfortably within the expected criteria for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the chart data to the table data. Paragraphing is utilised adequately, with an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph dedicated to the chart, and a final paragraph touching on satisfaction levels. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "Overall", "However", "Additionally", and "Furthermore". However, some referencing and mechanical linking feel slightly rigid or formulaic, preventing the progression from feeling entirely seamless. For instance, the transition into the table details lacks a smooth bridging sentence. Despite these minor lapses in cohesion, the flow remains logical and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed to serve the task effectively, with successful attempts at less common lexical items such as "proportion", "constitute", and "satisfaction percentage". Collocations are generally handled well, as seen in phrases like "full-time undergraduates" and "library user satisfaction". There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as referring to the count of students rather than percentages in certain contexts, but these do not impede communication. The use of terms related to data presentation demonstrates sufficient flexibility to convey numerical information accurately, reflecting a solid command of vocabulary suitable for this standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing showcases a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Sentences such as "Although 0% are in the not satisfied category due to library opening hours and staff helpfulness, the category of very satisfied users is the highest" illustrate a solid ability to construct subordinate clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences throughout the text, and punctuation is handled competently. While a few minor slips occur in verb agreement and prepositions, they are infrequent and do not obscure the intended meaning, thereby reflecting strong grammatical control and accuracy.
