IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates different kinds of library users while the table shows how satisfied library users are.

Overall, the pie chart has five categories of users including Full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students filling the highest amount out of other three. While, the table shows the satisfaction level of those users on the basis of five categories and three satisfaction levels.

The pie chart shows us that the full-time undergraduate and full-time post graduate students make up the highest number of library users while the academic staff and distance learning students from all courses contribute towards lowest numbers. On the other hand, part-time postgraduate users are less than their full-time counterparts but still more than academic staff and distance learning users.

The table gives us the satisfaction level of library users based on five indicators. Firstly, most of the students are very satisfied with library opening time, staff's service, more kind of books access, availability of journals and strong Wi-Fi. There are few students who are fairly satisfied as well. Only in availability of books, journals and the reliability of Wi-Fi have some users who are not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table, selecting main features such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates at 44% and the high satisfaction levels for library opening hours and staff helpfulness. However, some aspects are under-developed. For instance, the discussion of the table lacks specific numerical data, relying instead on vague descriptions like 'most of the students are very satisfied'. To reach a higher level, the response should integrate key data points from the table, such as the exact percentages for 'very satisfied' categories (e.g., 95% for staff helpfulness), rather than generalizing the information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and separate body paragraphs for the pie chart and the table, satisfying the requirements of a 6 band while showing some elements of a 6.5. Information is logically sequenced, and basic cohesive devices such as 'While', 'On the other hand', and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader. However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the awkward sentence connection 'While, the table shows...'. To achieve a higher score, the transitions between sentences and paragraphs need to be smoother and more varied, ensuring that ideas flow naturally without relying on abrupt introductory conjunctions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main features of the charts using appropriate terms such as 'proportion', 'categories', 'satisfaction level', and 'indicators'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'filling the highest amount out of other three' instead of accounting for the largest share, and 'more kind of books access' instead of improved book availability. These lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at this band level. Incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'full-time undergraduate and post graduate students make up the highest number' (missing plural markers and hyphens) and the sentence fragment 'Only in availability of books, journals and the reliability of Wi-Fi have some users who are not satisfied.' Despite these errors in prepositions, punctuation, and agreement, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over grammatical structures are needed to progress further.
