Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and the data table help to illustrate the results of a library user survey conducted at a university.

Overall, it is clear that majority of the library users are full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students. The users of the library show great satisfaction towards the helpfullness of the staff present but are not that satisfied with the availibility of the journals at the library.

The pie chart helps us evaluate the different categories of people that use the library in percentages. Among the different sections it is quite clearly presented that the majority of the users are actually students most specifically full-time undergraduate students(44%) and full-time postgraduate students(25%) whereas, only 7% of the users are the academic staff.

The data table shows us the satisfaction rate of the users in different fields, among them the most prominet being "helpfullness of the staff" with an almost 100% satisfaction rate. Most indivduals are also quite happy with the library opening hours but the problem arises with the availability of journals as many are not satisfied with it. A close second in the least satisfactory factors is the reliability of Wifi with approximately 19% of the users not being satisfied with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of both the pie chart and the data table. The overview clearly highlights that full-time students make up the majority of library users and identifies the key satisfaction trends, such as the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness and dissatisfaction with journal availability. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which keeps the score at this level. For instance, while the undergraduate and postgraduate figures are well supported with percentages, the data for academic staff and distance learners is only partially integrated. To reach the next band, the response would need to extend the reporting of data across all categories evenly without leaving certain segments under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into logical paragraphs. The introduction successfully sets the context, the overview captures the main trends, and subsequent paragraphs separate the pie chart data from the table data. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the information, such as 'whereas' and 'among them the most prominent'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in its referencing. To move further, the response would benefit from smoother transitions between sentences and more sophisticated referencing to link the visual data points together seamlessly without relying on formulaic signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the task requirements, employing standard terms related to surveys and statistics such as 'percentage', 'satisfaction rate', and 'majority'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, but there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'helpfullness' instead of helpfulness, 'availibility' instead of availability, 'prominet' instead of prominent, and 'indivduals' instead of individuals. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision in spelling and word form. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure correct spelling of key terms and incorporate a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and participial phrases reasonably well (e.g., 'users of the library show great satisfaction...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('that majority' instead of 'that the majority') and minor punctuation slips around parenthetical percentages. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. To progress to higher bands, the writer needs to incorporate a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, ensuring better control over articles and punctuation throughout the text.
