Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to cover both the chart and the table. However, some key features and comparisons are either under-developed or missing. For instance, the writer correctly identifies full-time undergraduates as the largest group at 44%, but the description of the remaining user categories is vague and lacks precise comparisons. Similarly, while the table data on satisfaction is touched upon—mentioning that 65% are very satisfied with opening hours and 50% with the availability of books—the reporting contains inaccuracies, such as stating that 'a percent of 35 users' are fairly satisfied rather than 35%. The overview provided in the introduction is also overly simplistic and fails to clearly highlight the overall trends across both data sets, resulting in a limited and uneven treatment of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, divided into an introduction and three body paragraphs. Ideas are generally grouped logically, with the first body paragraph focusing on user categories and the subsequent paragraphs discussing satisfaction levels. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is awkward or repetitive, with transitional phrases like 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' and 'Otherwise' used inappropriately to link contrasting or sequential ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when transition words fail to smoothly bridge the shift between the chart data and the table data. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs suffers from abrupt transitions and a lack of sophisticated signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'occupy,' 'massive percentage,' and 'statistically' (misspelled as 'statics'), but these attempts often suffer from poor word choice, incorrect word forms, and collocation errors. For example, 'categories of undergraduate students with full-time occupy the mainly users' contains several lexical and grammatical inaccuracies. Additionally, there are frequent errors in spelling and word form, such as 'statics' instead of 'statistics,' 'finds' instead of 'find,' and 'percent' used where percentage is required. These lexical inadequacies cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few clumsy attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the response, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'The chart and table illustrates'), incorrect preposition use ('from diverse academic level'), and faulty article usage ('the postgraduate with full-time'). Furthermore, sentence construction is often ungrammatical, as seen in phrases like 'a numerous users are satisfied' and 'While a percent of 35 users are fairly satisfied.' Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as mid-sentence capitalization and comma splices, also detract from the overall grammatical control.
