Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to report data from both the pie chart and the table, the selection of information is mechanical and lacks a clear, overarching overview of the main trends. For instance, when describing the survey categories, the student simply lists percentages in descending order ('44% of full-time undergratuates', '25% of full-time postgraduates') without synthesizing the data or grouping related information effectively. Furthermore, the description of the satisfaction table is incomplete, trailing off at the end ('Reliability of wi-fi is 48% of very satisfied and 33% of fairly satisfied and 19% are not'). To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clear overview highlighting the most striking features, such as the dominance of undergraduates among library users and the generally high satisfaction levels regarding staff helpfulness and opening hours, while fully completing all reported data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression and logical paragraphing. The student attempts to structure the text by using introductory phrases like 'To begin with', but the grouping of information is disjointed. Sentences are often mechanically linked or repetitive in structure, frequently relying on phrases like 'we see' or 'is' to introduce data points (e.g., 'In the rest of area, we see 8%...'). Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear or repetitive, such as switching abruptly between the categories chart and the satisfaction table without smooth transitional devices. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately, ensure logical links between sentences and paragraphs, and avoid repetitive formulaic expressions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic, repetitive terms and direct lifting from the prompt, such as 'survey of library users', 'full-time undergraduates', and 'distance learning'. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'satisfaction of library students in unversity', 'in the rest of area', and spelling mistakes like 'undergratuates' and 'unversity'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are sparse or inaccurate. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating precise synonyms and paraphrasing key terms, while ensuring correct word formation and minimizing spelling errors that occasionally impede smooth reading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and repetitive subject-verb patterns. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty or incomplete. Frequent grammatical errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Overall, in the chart shows that...', 'Students is very satisfied'), missing articles or prepositions, and incomplete sentence endings (e.g., stopping abruptly at '19% are not'). Punctuation and phrasing are also unsteady throughout the text. To progress, the writer must develop better control over basic grammatical agreements, avoid sentence fragments, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures to explain data comparisons clearly.
