IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie chart gives an information of the categories of library users in the university with their corresponding library user satisfaction on the table.
Overall, most of the users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff, while users were fairly satisfied with the availability of the books and users were not satisfied with availability of journals.
In detail, 95% of the library users are very satisfied when it comes to the helpfulness of staff followed by library opening hours which is less than 30% of the former. A minimal difference of the figure in the satisfaction of the availability of books, availabilty of journals, and realibility of wifi was noted at 45% to 50%.
On the one hand, 40% of library users identified as fairly satisfied with the availability of books. A similar figure of 35% was observed in the library opening hours and availability of journals which closely followed by realibility of wifi at 33% and helpfulness of staff with lowest figure of 5%.
Whereas, users were not satisfied with the availability of journals and realibility of wifi at 20% and half of that was of the availability of books

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally and tangentially, which places it at this level. While the student attempts to mention categories and satisfaction ratings, the data is severely confused and inaccurately reported. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that users were not satisfied with the availability of journals when only 20% expressed dissatisfaction, and the body paragraphs misinterpret percentages significantly, such as claiming library opening hours accounted for less than 30% of the staff helpfulness figure or misreporting the data from the table entirely. Key features like the dominant 44% full-time undergraduates or the overwhelming 95% very satisfied rating for staff helpfulness are poorly contextualised. Furthermore, the pie chart data regarding user categories is largely neglected in the body paragraphs, leaving major parts of the prompt unreported and inadequately developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with the use of introductory and transitional phrases like "Overall", "In detail", and "On the one hand", but the overall progression lacks clarity due to the confusion in data reporting. Paragraphing is attempted, splitting the text into an introduction and several body sections, but referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which category or rating is being discussed. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the misuse of "On the one hand" without a balancing "On the other hand". While there is an attempt to structure a report, the logical flow is disrupted by inaccurate data transitions and poor paragraph internal cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic response, attempting some topic-specific terms such as "categories", "satisfaction", "availability", and "percentage". However, there is noticeable inaccuracy in word choice and collocation, along with recurring spelling errors like "realibility" instead of reliability and "availabilty". The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic phrasing to describe statistical data. While the communication of general ideas is not entirely obscured, the lexical limitations and errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to grammatical strain. There are noticeable errors in prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as "gives an information of" instead of "provides information on", and awkward phrasings like "half of that was of the availability of books". Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing full stops at the end of paragraphs. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with high frequency and restrict the grammatical range and accuracy to this level.
